Stepped drill are often used to cut holes in sheetmetal or thin material. It is convenient to use, since less forces are put on the material that is being cut. The hole gradually gets bigger as the drill goes deeper in the material. When using the normal method of making a pilot hole with for example a small drill(4mm) and then directly drilling with a 20mm drill, often material gets caught in the drill. The result can be damage to the product, or personal injury. When using a stepped drill, this problem does not occur. We often use it in our own workshop for drilling holes in plastic enclosures and sheetmetal.
