5/3 valves are used to also be able to use air cylinders in middle positions. This is never as precise as a CNC control or electronic cylinder. But it can be very useful to experience manual operation. There are 3 variants. We offer the open-center version here. There are also closed-center and pressure-center versions. In the open-center version, the ports to the double-acting cylinder are open / vented when the coils are not being actuated. As a result, no pressure is maintained in the actuator. The piston will then basically remain where you stopped it. However, you can just move it manually, because there is no counter pressure. Therefore not suitable for vertical applications, because its not locked in position. Or if there are opposing forces. Can be particularly useful if you want to be able to send a cylinder to its open or closed position from a PLC or CNC. But that in the middle position, operator, can bring the cylinder / piston rod to the desired position without resistance. Often used in material clamping applications.
