5/3 valves are used to also be able to use air cylinders in middle positions. This is never as precise as a CNC control or electronic cylinder. But it can be very useful to allow manual operation. There are 3 variants. We offer the pressure-center version. There are also open-center and closed-center versions. In the pressure-center version, the ports to the double acting cylinder are both pressurized when the coils are not being actuated. As a result of which pressure is maintained in the system and pnuematic actuator. The piston will then basically remain where you stopped it. The advantage of the pressir center version is if you have some leakage in hoses somewhere, the piston will still remain where it is. The disadvantage is that you cannot use this type of valve for normal cylinders that only have 1 piston rod. Because the surface above and below the the piston is not the same, because you have the piston rod on one side and not on the other. The system will always have a preference, and therefore usually push the piston out. if you still want to work with such a valve. Then you need a cylinder with a continuous piston rod. Or a rodless cylinder. These have equal surfaces, so dont have this problem.
