DamenCNC 50mm Pneumatic Retraction System

The DamenCNC 50mm Pneumatic Retraction System, which is commonly used in robotic milling projects. This is a product that evolved as we got involved as a hardware supplier in more and more robotic milling projects. In the beginning we used a simple system with a rubber/elastic band. As the milling motor and robots got bigger and bigger, and also clients started using them to produce 24/7, it became apparent that such a solution did not last very long. The elastic cords wore out quickly and required regular maintenance. So we decided to start from scratch and make our own systems. As a basis we used IGUS triflex, 3D cable chains as these had proven to be reliable. To solve the problem with elastic cords wearing out, we moved to a pneumatic system. This solved three problems. We no longer had any wear issues. And the second is that we could increase the stroke massivly, to accommodate a wider range of 3d motions. The third problem it solved is that by regulating the pressure, we could set the pulling force. This is great because it means if you have a light cable set and small robot, you set the pressure low, to get a low pulling force. For bigger robots and heavier cable sets, you simply increase the pressure to increase the pulling force.

If you are new to robotic milling you are probably wondering why you need a pneumatic retraction system in the first place. This will become apparent when you start milling. We have many clients that decided not to get such a system, and simply hang cables from the ceiling or ty rap them to the robot. This DIY setup might work for a while. But most of these clients came back to us, because cables tend to get caught in the robotic joints. Often this leads to damage to the cable sets. We have also had occasion where the complete M23 connectors were pulled off the milling motors. In some cases this caused damage beyond repair. If you are serious about robotic milling you need a retraction system to protect your cables, and your millig motor.In very rare cases even with a retraction system, it's possible to get the cables caught behind an object (7th axis for example, or a fixture). We make our systems with an end of stroke sensor, that you can hook up to the robotics controller, to stop all motion,when that sensor is active.
