When using a ball screw spindle with a large pitch or when using a rack and pinion system for the drive, it is sometimes necessary to apply a reduction that is greater than what can easily be realized with a belt drive. This can also be the case with LSM modules that use a timing belt, due to the large diameter pulleys used. A stepper motor system that we sell can easily run at 800 revolutions per minute. When we apply a rack and pinion system with a module of 2.0 and a 15 tooth gear. A single rotation of the gear gives 94.2mm of travel. That gives a maximum speed of 75360 mm / min. Which is really too fast for most applications. Furthermore, the power you have on the slide is quite limited. With a 1:10 reduction we arrive at a more acceptable maximum speed of 7536mm / min, and 10 times more force. It is important to know that with larger gear reductions, more energy is lost in the form of heat. 1 in 5, 1 in 10, and 1 in 20 are fairly common, 1 in 40 and higher does exist, however the losses are very large there, and it is often more sensible to use a different type of gearbox. Usually a planetary gearbox is the logical choice.

• Keep in mind that when the gearbox is loaded, you also have a deviation. This is not play but the limited stiffness of the drive (if this is a problem, use a planetary gearbox)
• If you are building an A B or C axis that also requires very high stiffness, check out our hollow shaft gearboxes. These are better suited for that purpose.
